Chapter Fourteen

After dropping off my new plant, we headed up to the Restaurant de Normandie for lunch. Jessie had left it up to me to decide between the three main restaurants, and after getting a whiff of Charles’s breakfast this morning, I had to try some myself.

Thankfully the waiter didn’t bat an eye when I ordered myself a giant breakfast for lunch. Jessie went for something a little more reasonable, that being a tuna sandwich. The restaurant was ridiculously efficient and had us served within five minutes.

We headed for the nearby mess hall, where we set down our plates and started digging in. After making short work of my bacon and sausage, I paused to say, “Man, this work sure makes one hungry.”

Jessie nodded, having already finished the first half of her sandwich. “This kind of work is really good for weight loss, I’ll tell you that. I hardly have to pay attention to my calories anymore.” She smirked at me. “Well, you probably never had to pay attention to calories, huh? Looks like you still have a youthful metabolism.”

“As long as there are no bakeries nearby, I’m usually safe. Though if we’re going to be harboring in New Orleans a lot, my luck might change.”

“Nothing like New Orleans food. You ever try it?”

“I’ve never been that far south, actually.”

“Girl, you’ve been missing out. The boiled crawfish alone are to die for.”

“I’m looking forward to being enlightened.”

The door to the otherwise quiet mess hall opened and in came Ben and Ruby. I wondered if the two often stuck together, as this was my second time seeing them both in the same room. I glanced at Jessie, who thankfully was on the same page as me.

She waved at the two. “Ben, Ruby! Come sit with us.”

They both hesitated, looked at each other, then sat opposite us at the table. Ruby looked rather upset, while Ben was more stoic. I wasn’t sure how to breach the conversation, but Jessie seemed to have it under control.

“We didn’t see you at the bakery this morning, Ruby… What happened?”

Ruby looked down at her food, which was nothing more than a buttered biscuit. “They found Cillian. He’s… he’s dead.” She buried her face into her hands, silent tears streaming.

Ben awkwardly put a hand on her shoulder, while Jessie herself teared up, saying, “I heard that from one of the waitresses, but I was hoping it was just a rumor.”

“No,” Ruby said, removing her hands from her face. “He’s gone. I’ve seen the body myself. I wouldn’t believe it until I did.”

“That must’ve been so hard to see.”

She sniffled again, managing to pull back the tears. “At least I know now. I didn’t sleep at all last night, sending him text after text, asking everyone I knew if they had seen him. Finally this morning Mrs. Vivian took me aside and told me exactly what happened.”

Jessie and I waited with bated breath, but Ruby stopped there.

I had to know, so I asked, “Remember last night when I
